Sandstone is Muzzy Lane’s technology for bringing immersive, fully 3D games to the web. The result of years of work, Sandstone delivers high-quality, multiplayer 3D games in the browser via an always-on web service. Games can be played from any web-connected PC (and soon Mac), and the service keeps everything up to date and compatible.
We designed Sandstone to overcome many of the hurdles that serious-games projects face, and it’s unique features will help all kinds of games thrive on the internet.
- Designed to make game creation easier: Complex game systems can be built with Javascript and XML, similar to web applications. And games can be created and played without compiling, making it much easier to test and revise.
- Publishing is instant: Everyone can get the latest version online in their browser, no cumbersome CD installations or IT headaches.
- Manage everything from the web: Games can be assigned and managed from a website, or any LMS. Learners’ progress can be tracked and assessed from any web-connected computer, since all data is stored online.
- Multiplayer is built-in: Any game can be multiplayer without additional development work. Players can invite friends to a multiplayer game by simply sending a link.
- Sandstone games speak to the Web: Sandstone games can interact with everything else that’s on the web, from Flash, to social networks, to any web application. In an online curriculum, In-game progress can determine what material a student is given next. On facebook, players can invite friends to join them (or see their exploits) with a simple link. Items earned in a 3D game can be used in a mobile app.
Exciting projects are being built on Sandstone now, including Making History II, and an exciting new learning-game for middle school science.
