Projects

In addition to our own titles, we put our skills and Sandstone platform to work for our partners, creating always-on, web-based game services with the sophistication and immersion of commercial 3D games. Distribution is simplified and technical headaches are minimized.

Our Sandstone platform keeps costs lower than traditional game development, and our team is a recognized leader in developing games for learning. Partner projects include:

ClearLab Project: Games for Middle-School Science

ClearLab is a project to create innovative games that will aid science learning at the middle school level. The project’s goal is to help students improve performance on standardized assessments, and ultimately, to encourage middle-school age students to enroll in elective or AP science classes, and majors and careers in science.

The ClearLab project will develop a series of immersive 3D games that can be played in the browser – at school, the library, at home – anywhere with access to the internet. Teachers will be able to assign, manage and assess student game play from the web. It is being developed by a team including Muzzy Lane Software, the Federation of American Scientists, teachers, and curriculum developers from K12 Inc. Scientists, educators and developers interested in science games are encouraged to visit the ClearLab website and join the community.

Participatory Chinatown: A Community-based Digital Media Project

Participatory Chinatown is a project exploring the ways digital media can transform the planning practices shaping Boston’s Chinatown from a disjointed transaction between developers and communities to a persistent conversation shaped by participatory learning.

Funded by a MacArthur Foundation grant to explore digital media’s ability to help people learn, Participatory Chinatown is a collaborative project bringing together the Asian Community Development Corporation (ACDC), Emerson College, and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC.) Participatory Chinatown is being built on Muzzy Lane’s Sandstone platform.

Past/Present: Social History for Middle School

PAST/PRESENT is a series of innovative 3-D games that engage middle-school students in social history. It is one of seven projects funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s American History and Civics Initiative to explore new ways to teach history and civics to middle and high school students using 21st Century media.

In the Past/Present prototype, students play the role of Anna Caruso, an immigrant textile mill worker in 1906. As Anna, they face everyday challenges and ethical decisions in a town facing labor unrest. Our Partners on this project include documentary filmmakers the Center for New American Media and Maryland Public Television.

Cell Saver: Learning Games for Middle School Science

CELL SAVER is a game prototype created as part of a larger project to study how game-based approaches can help improve science achievement in American middle schools. Muzzy Lane is teaming with the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), and the project is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

The first phase of the project included research, design and prototyping work. The research included analysis that identified four areas where students struggle most, and the design work has focused on developing game mechanics that can address those areas. The first prototype (Cell Saver) tests Microgame mechanics, which have interesting potential for reinforcing content-knowledge.
