Alan Turing, widely considered the father of modern computer science, was also responsible for one of the greatest intelligence coups of World War II. He devised an electromechanical system, know as the bombe, to define the settings for Germany's Enigma Cipher. His work gave the Allies access to valuable military and diplomatic communications.

Germany's Luftwaffe used two types of fighters in the Battle of Britain. The Messerschmitt Bf109E was a fast and nimble plane; its range, however, was just over 400 miles, so it had limited applications. The Messerschmitt Bf110C was designed as a fighter escort for long-range bombers, but it was slow and hard to maneuver.

Galeazzo Ciano was Mussolini's son-in-law. He was appointed Italy's Foreign Minister, but demoted to Ambassador to the Vatican for opposing the war. At the Fascist Grand Council meeting in 1943, Ciano voted to oust Il Duce. Hitler restored Mussolini and Ciano became a German prisoner. He was shot in Verona in January, 1944.

Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor was not a complete success in that the three aircraft carriers assigned to the U.S. Pacific Fleet were not damaged. They were not in port on December 7. The Enterprise and Lexington were delivering planes to Wake and Midway Islands, and the Saratoga was in Washington for repairs at the Bremerton Naval Yard.
